Mumbai Diary page: Monday musings *Khiladi on the football field*
It's common knowledge that Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is a fitness freak. But not many know that he’s quite a football lover too.*Bollywood superstar Ashay Kumar at the Don Bosco High Schoool (Matunga) ground yesterday for the Kenkre Champions League seven-a-side football tournament. Of course, he was a big draw himself, and chatted with kids and parents after the match. Pic/Ashwin Ferro*

The “Khiladi” was at his alma mater, the Don Bosco High School’s grounds in Matunga last morning, cheering on as his son Aarav participated in the Kenkre Champions League seven-a-side football tournament.

Not content simply watching the action, though, Akki and a few of his mates, including singer Shaan, decided to get into the action themselves and played against a young set of kids from the Kenkre Academy. Akshay’s wife and actor Twinkle Khanna was a keen spectator as her hubby played goalkeeper (he used to be goalkeeper for his school team too).

Akshay’s team ended up 4-2 victors in the fun kick-about that saw the 47-year-old pulling off some long one-armed throws with ease and sprinting across the breadth of the ground like a teenager. “I love football... I follow Manchester United,” Akshay told us later.

The busy actor in fact even made time to watch the late-night matches of the FIFA World Cup on TV last year. “I was supporting Germany throughout. They are a very good team. I was sure they would win the World Cup,” he said, even as he walked away to happily oblige a bunch of kids for autographs and selfies.

*Working a little too well*
Going by what we learn from her support staff, the state’s Rural Development Minister, Pankaja Munde, is proving to be a rather tough boss in Mantralaya. The elder daughter of the late Gopinath Munde wants everything perfectly done and frankly, staffers like office assistants, junior clerks, office boys and liftmen are not used to it!

She keeps them on a leash, doesn’t take any nonsense and pulls them up whenever required. Sources said the tough regimen they have to undergo has forced many staffers to get shifted to other offices where their goof-ups could go unnoticed, perhaps. We learn that a few have already quit her office. Efficiency, apparently, has a price.

*Teching it to the streets*
Traffic signals are necessary, but they can be a source of irritation as well. Not because they make you stop, but because of the beggars who take full advantage of the stationary vehicles. We were waiting for the lights to change at a signal in the city the other day, when we saw a not-unfamiliar sight a hijra, all decked up in a nice sari, sauntering up getting ready to stretch out her palm.

But just before she reached our vehicle, she received a phone call. We could only watch in amazement as she dug out, of all things, an iPhone 6. There is no mistaking the swish new offering from Apple, and those of us with more humble cellphones were admittedly awestruck.

You wouldn’t expect a hijra earning her daily bread from small donations to be toting a high-end accoutrement. Unless, of course, it was a knockoff in which case, it was a really good one.

*Peace, love and acceptance*
At the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) parade on Saturday, one of the first-time attendees included American Meena Wells, a trans-gendered woman in her 20s. Although originally from the US, Wells said she visited India in the course of her cultural studies research, and fell in love with the country.*Meena Wells. Pic/Varun Singh*

She has been traveling to India, mostly Bangalore, for the last five years and is currently in the city. Wells finds India fascinating and says that she has not encountered any discrimination a heartening note for those who have been ostracised, shunned and attacked for their alternative sexuality.

Her favourite suburb is Matunga, because of the excellent South Indian food to be found there. Maybe there was good reason the book (Eat, Pray, Love) and the movie started with the word “Eat”! Reported by Mid-Day 7 hours ago.

Four Muslim girl students have emerged as toppers in a written quiz competition held on Swami Vivekananda in Gujarat. Felicitating the students on the occasion, state Chief Minister Anandi Patel said students must read inspirational books for building their character which will eventually help in building the nation.

On the occasion, Patel asked students to set up a small library at their houses by saving pocket money they get from their parents.

"National rebuilding is possible only through character building and for this reading of inspiring books regularly is very important. Every student should try to build a small library in his or her house by saving pocket money," Patel said while giving away prizes to toppers at the function organised by Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Memorial.

The winners included Rehana Rahim of a government high school from Junagadh, Yasrabanu Master from HBK New School, Aahmedabad, Zeelbanu Multani from JN Mehra high school in Amreli and Mariyamkhatu Aslam Khan from Ganga school in Valsad.

Patel launched 'Swachh Bharat" campaign of Ramakrishna Mission by releasing an information brochure stating future projects of the local centre here and views of Swami Vivekananda on cleanliness. "At least 74,529 students of class IX and XII from 989 schools across the state had participated in the competition organised by Ramakrishna Mission," said Swami Nikhileswarananda, Head, Vadodara centre.

*The warden, who forcibly shaved the head of two students at the St Joseph's Indian High School, Vittal Mallaya Road, was arrested by the Cubbon Park police on Monday. *

"We have registered a case against Kiran, the hostel warden, under section 23 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and arrested him," DCP(Central)Sandeep Patil said. The jurisdictional magistrate court remanded Kiran in judicial custody. The charge on which Kiran has been booked is bailable.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Kiran forcibly tonsured Francis Sebastian, a class 10 student, and his younger brother Charles Sebastian, a class 9 student, on the grounds that their heads were "infested with lice."

Police are also interrogating him to find out if he shaved the head of 10 other students similarly, a source said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has served a show-cause notice on the school, said Kimmane Ratnakar, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education.

"A departmental inquiry will be initiated and action taken once the school responds to the notice," he said on the sidelines of an event on Monday. Deccan Herald's attempts to contact the school's rector, Anil D'Mello, didn't fructify. Reported by Deccan Herald 12 hours ago.

Tonsuring of students: Joseph's School stoutly denies role

*St Joseph's Indian High School has been wrongly accused of tonsuring its students and the institution has nothing to do with the incident, the management has claimed.
*
Last week, a complaint was lodged by the parent of one of the boys that the school had forcefully tonsured some of the students as punishment for skipping classes.

Speaking to Deccan Herald on Tuesday, Fr Praveen, management member, St Josephs Institute, said, "The incident has taken place at St Louis Boarding. The school or the school principal has got nothing to do with it. In fact, the director and the assistant director of the boarding are appointed by the management and the school has no role in it. The factors binding the boarding and the school are that the same management runs both and that the children in the boarding home attend this school."

The boarding home caters for rural students and when the parents leave their children here, they give the management the responsibility to take care of the health and hygiene of the students. "The students approached the assistant director with the problem that they had lice. They wanted to be tonsured. However, the assistant director told them that it was enough if they washed their hair."

He added that later the students approached the class X student (accused of tonsuring) asking him to "shorten their hair". The student knows how to give a haircut and upon request by his hostelmates he sometimes gives basic haircut, Fr Praveen said.

The management has also specified that out of the eleven students, three tonsured their heads "not even at the hostel but in their respective places as a way of fulfilling a religious vow."

As for the rest of the students, their heads were not tonsured but their hair was shortened after a request from the students themselves, Fr Praveen clarified.

Further, the younger brother of the boy who has complained about this to his parents also stays in the same hostel and he has stated that the boys voluntarily approached the class X student for a haircut. The younger brother continues to stay in the hostel, according to Fr Praveen.

He said the student who had complained had a habit of missing classes, but the other students had not missed any classes and the need to punish them was out of question.

In the wake of the incident, a show-cause notice has been issued to the school seeking their explanation. The State Juvenile Protection Unit and the Block Education Officer have also visited the school to inquire into the incident. The BEO has submitted a report in this regard to the education department. Reported by Deccan Herald 12 hours ago.

Did This Chilean Woman Get Shoved to the Ground by a Ghost?

If you thought most lawyers were pricks, wait until you see how ghosts hanging out in their offices treat people.

According to the Daily Mail, a 34-year-old Chilean woman said she was recently shoved to the ground by a ghost as she walked past the reception desk of a lawyer's office in Santiago, and there is surveillance footage that could legitimize her claim. You have to admit, the sign language interpreter in the bottom right corner does a hell of job making the video even more terrifying than it already was.

Cecilia Carrasco said after she hit the floor, she looked up to see who had pushed her to the ground because she felt two hands shove her over. The receptionist told her nobody was there, but Carrasco said she didn't believe her until she saw footage of the incident.

Carrasco said she has no idea why she was shoved to the floor, but thinks the ghost might be after her because she saw something similar happen in a film to another woman. We think somebody should tell her that "Ghost" was a fictional story.

CBSE introduces co-scholastic activities for Std I-V students In an effort to incorporate holistic education for students in the school curriculum, for the first time, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is introducing co-scholastic activities in the upper primary level (Std I to V). Co-scholastic activities cover integrating life skills, values, health, sanitation, etc.

In the daily curriculum of students. According to the circular dated February 2, schools have been asked to integrate these activities in the curriculum soon. “Till now, co-scholastic activities were only for secondary and higher secondary classes, and have proved to be interesting and helpful for both students and teachers.*Representational pic*

These activities work around value education and the approach is holistic,” said Avnita Bir, principal of R N Podar high School, Santacruz. Bir said that including these activities for lower classes means that the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) will also be applicable to them.

According to the circular, co-scholastic education is an integral part of the school curricular programme, complementing formal education by contributing to the holistic development of students. “The Board has brought out new books to facilitate teachers for effectively integrating life skills in the teaching-learning process.

The activities and worksheets work around students’ queries and concerns, and therefore, will enable them to develop life skills by applying interdisciplinary and disciplinary skills in a range of real-life contexts,” states the circular, adding that regular activities in class is also a must.

Principals of CBSE schools have regularly complained about the board’s circulars being released at the last minute. However, this time they are happy with the timing. “We are currently in the process of planning our module for the next academic year, so incorporating this will be much easier at this stage,” said Seema Maindiratta, principal of DAV School, Kharghar.

At present, even though CCE is only implemented for Std IX and X, many schools have started incorporating activities in lower classes as well. “The board has taken a good decision to include evaluation for lower classes; both students and teachers will benefit from it,” added Maindiratta.

CBSE has also made the English and Hindi versions of notes, worksheets and other publications available for the benefit of schools and directed them to ensure that the school library is equipped with the same for the benefit of students. Reported by Mid-Day 6 hours ago.

10 Astounding Stories of Dumb Luck

Life is a trip. These 10 tall tales will make you infinitely gracious for your trials and travails, for it could always be worse. We'll start with the good and then get to the ugly.

*"GOOD" Dumb Luck*
*Metal Rod Strikes Construction Worker's Skull, Feels No Pain ... Like a Boss*Eduardo Leite was working at a Rio de Janeiro construction site in August 2012 when he felt something strike his brain. He reached up and felt a six-foot iron rod sticking out of his face. It had fallen from five stories and punctured his skull.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was fully conscious when he went to the hospital. "He was holding it and his face was covered in blood. His look was as if nothing had happened. When he arrived he told the doctors he wasn't feeling anything, no pain, nothing," his wife said. After a five-hour surgery and a dose of baby Aspirin, Leite was all right.

He would've lost an eye or become paralyzed if it had entered an inch or two in either direction. It hit a "non-eloquent area" of the brain, a place that serves no major function. Let's hope Mr. Leite doesn't become an asshole like Phineas Gage.

*Adopted Son Finds Birth Mother He Already Knew*A story that will give even sternest red-blooded American hard-ass the feels, a 22-year-old man discovered his lost birth mother was his coworker.

Steve Flaig worked as a delivery driver at Lowe's in Grand Rapids, Mich. Since he was 18, he was on a quest to find his mom. He went to the agency that handled his adoption and got a name, but for years he had no luck because he was spelling it wrong. The agency gave him the correct spelling and within days, his life would irreversibly change.

His mother, Christine Tallady, worked as a cashier.

"Passing each other, it was just, 'Hey,'" Tallady said. At the time Steve didn't know how to handle it so the agency phoned Tallady to let her know. They met at a restaurant the very next day. "He got out of his seat, and we just hugged and hugged and hugged and cried and cried."

Steve's roommate told "Today" that he was completely different afterwards. "He's infinitely happier. He constantly has a smile on his face and seems a lot more excited than he has been in a long time."

Astoundingly, Flaig and Tallady went to the same high school, the same church, and lived very close to each other. And now I need to clean off my keyboard because it's soaked in man-tears.

*Man Saves Falling Baby, Twice*In Detroit during the 1930s, a series of freak occurrences happened. Joseph Figlock was a humble street sweeper minding his own business when he looked up and saw a baby falling from the sky. He broke the young'un's fall and the baby survived.

In 1938, one year later, the same baby fell from the same fourth-floor window. Figlock was again in the right place at the right time, and saved the two-year-old yet again. And the Mother of the Year award goes to...

*Seth MacFarlane Misses Flight on 9/11*Seth MacFarlane partied too hard on September 10, 2001. The next morning he was scheduled for American Airlines Flight 11, the plane that crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Hungover and late, he missed his flight by 15 minutes. At 8:46 a.m., it careened into the building and the world changed forever.

*Massachusetts Man Wins Same Lottery, Twice*In October 2014, a Norwood, Mass. man wrote down his lucky numbers. Forgetting that he already owned a season pass for the same numbers, a representative called him and informed him he technically won twice.

Kenneth Stokes won $546,000. The odds of someone winning twice were 985,517 to one. He now receives a cool $25,000 a year for 20 years.*"BAD" DUMB LUCK*
*The Man Present in Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki*On August 6, 1945, Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on business. He was done for the day and was about to leave the city when he saw a plane by high overhead. He then saw a tiny silvery package fall slowly from the sky. He instinctively took cover.

Yamaguchi was blown away and lost consciousness. When he awoke, the dust blanketing the city put it in an eerie darkness. His ear drums ruptured, his eyes went temporarily blind, and searing burns covered his body. He was 1.5 miles from ground zero.

Panicking, Yamaguchi ran to a train that was still in order. He fled to his hometown, Nagasaki. In typical Japanese fashion-while still in bandages-he went back to work on August 9. That day, "Fat Man" hit the city. He was again within 1.5 miles of blast radius.

In 2009, the Japanese government recognized him as the only person to survive both. Yamaguchi lived a ripe old life until he died in 2010 at 93.

*Canadian Gets Mauled by Bear, then Shot by Son-in-Law*Winners of Canada's annual Best Name in the Universe Award Wilf Lloyd and Skeet Podrasky were hunting last October when a massive grizzly appeared in the distance. It attacked Lloyd and mauled him. Podrasky drew his gun and began firing. The first shot missed the bear and struck Lloyd, injuring him seriously.

The bear was made good, however, and conservation officers came to the scene. While the two men deserve to be on his list for those names alone, Lloyd takes the cake for the unluckiest.

*Park Ranger Survives Seven Lightning Strikes*Between 1942 and 1977, Roy Sullivan worked as a park ranger in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. He holds the Guinness World Record for being struck seven times by lightning. They've dubbed him the "Human Lightning Rod" and the "Human Lightning Conductor."

He survived blasts to the head, which in nearly every instance burnt his hair completely off. One time he was hit while a bear simultaneously tried to eat the trout on the end of his fishing line. He promptly swatted it with a tree branch. (He later claimed it was the 22nd time he's had to hit bears with sticks.) Multiple lightning bolts couldn't kill him, but he committed suicide at 71 because a chick wouldn't love him back.

*The World's Luckiest Unluckiest Man*Croatian Frano Selak has lived the life of John McLane. He has had numerous brushes with death, lending him the nickname the "world's luckiest unluckiest man." Here are some of his follies.

o. 1962: Survived a train crash in a river that drowned 17.
o. 1963: Survived a plane crash by landing in a haystack-19 dead

On Day One, Yashodham declared their first innings for 332-6 in 88 overs after electing to bat. Ryan was the highest scorer with 131 runs. His 162-ball knock was laced with 21 hits to the fence.

His fine bowling ensured that the opposition was bowled out for a paltry 24 runs in the first innings. Vinayak Kunwar, who took three wickets giving away three runs, ably supported him.

Following-on, Ryan took three wickets giving away 24 runs as Gokuldham were reeling at 104-8 in 54 overs at stumps. "This is the first time that our school has entered the Elite Division. If we win with a bonus point we have a chance of qualifying for the semi. Tomorrow, we just want to take the remaining two wickets quickly," said the Class VIII student. *Thermofoam art, oil paintings, pencil drawings, charcoal works, pen dotted works, nib paintings, glass paintings, plaster of Paris works and the list is not an exhaustive one.*

These were among the wide array of art works exhibited at 'Art Flash' at Sharada Vidyalaya inMangaluru on Friday. The unique thing about the expo was that all these were created by the students of the institution. As many as 150 art works explored vivid capabilities and artistic temperament of the little artists.

The works which catered to different tastes, was organised at the Dhyana Mandira of the college. The artifacts depicted nature, people, spirituality and many other themes.

Shrinidhi from ninth standard who had exhibited some of her thermofoam works said that she and her friends have made decorative items out of thermofoam, under the guidance of her art teachers Sathyanarayana Salethur and Suresh K Pandavarakallu.

She said to make an artifact, one needs to cut thermofoam into required shape, join it. The carving is done with the use of soldering machine. The artifact is then applied golden acrylic paint to give a brilliant metallic look. The advantage of thermofoam over thermocol is that one can create three dimensional shapes with it. Also, the material is not easily breakable unlike thermocol. Small useful items such as pen stands can also be made out of it.

Art teacher Sathyanarayana spoke to Deccan Herald and said that the thermofoam is being used for stage decorations. The students have experimented with the material to make artifacts. The thermofoam works featured in the expo were done by students during the last 15 days. This is the large scale exhibition of this kind, he added.

Decorative items

Yakshagana headgear, flowerpot, models of ship, flowers and other decorative items such as wall hangings prepared of thermofoam, drew the attention of onlookers.

Mahima from ninth standard had displayed two nib painting works of her. She had also made plaster of Paris models of Lord Shiva, Ganesha and the like, without using moulds, and had adored them with fine carving work.

Shubhodeep Pal from eighth standard had to his credit, water colour paintings on animals and birds. He said he likes the aspects of nature most and depicts the same in his paintings. It took him two to three hours to draw a painting. He added that his friends support him a lot.

Aditya from eighth standard had an interesting anecdote to share. When he was in LKG, he drew his mother's portrait. His mother couldnt stop laughing after looking at her son's drawing. But, Aditya wanted to make his mom happy and hence kept on practicing until he got a true appreciation. That was how he developed an interest towards painting, he said.

Thejas Aithal studying in ninth standard, speaking on worli art said that the art form was developed by tribal people of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Combination of triangles, half circles an straight lines are used to create most of the images. At the expo, the art was depicted on paper by students. Here, he and his fellow mates have used white poster colour on red and saffron backgrounds, featuring village life, festivities and deities.

Art teacher Sathyanarayana said that the artifacts, drawings and paintings were all created by students. Many of these were done as a part of classroom activity during the current academic year from June till date. Also, students themselves have arranged the art works in the hall, he added.

Akanksha S Alva from eighth standard, who exhibited five of her paintings which include pencil drawing, acrylic and coloured charcoal arts, aid that she likes the coloured charcoal medium the most. She exhibited the portraits of Sai baba and Buddha, along with landscape paintings with acrylic medium.

Sharada Educational Institutions President Prof M B Puranik inaugurated the exhibition and stressed on the need to nurture the talents of amateur artists.

Talents of the students should not be confined to schools but taken out to the people.Sharada High School Principal Sunitha V Madi, P U College Principal Dayananda Kateel and art teacher Suresh K Pandavarakallu was present. Reported by Deccan Herald 3 days ago.

Mumbai: Two attempted suicides leave one dead

Mumbai: Two attempted suicides leave one dead Central Railways witnessed two cases of attempted suicides on Saturday — while an 18-year-old woman who jumped in front of an incoming train at Badlapur station survived, a 37-year-old man who made a similar attempt at Dombivli station succumbed to injuries.

*The body of Manish Salve being removed from the tracks. Pic/ Shrikant Khuperkar*

While Manish Savla, an ex-call center employee, who jumped in front of an incoming train at Dombivli station succumbed to his injuries, passengers present at Badlapur station, from where Sailee Tawde jumped onto the tracks, were prompt enough to rescue her and rushed her to the hospital.

*Deadly plunge*
The first incident occured around 8.30 am while the Ambarnath-CST A18 UP local was entering the platform. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP) officials, Savla jumped in front of the train and although the motorman tried to pull his brakes, he was run over.

mid-day lensman, Shrikant Khuperkar, who was present when the tragedy unfolded, said that it caused panic among the passengers. “I was at the ticket counter when I heard people screaming and running. When I reached the spot, I saw that the train was still moving and the man, still alive, was lying on the tracks with his right leg twisted upwards,” Khuperkar recalled. Although the GRP officials rushed to the spot almost immediately, and took the man to the nearby Shastrinagar Hospital, they could not save him.

Rajashree Sarode, police inspector, GRP Dombivli Police Station, said that Savla was run over by the train and had absolutely no chance of survival. “Our officials took him to Shastrinagar Hospital. However he died en-route,” said Sarode.

While the eyewitnesses informed our lensman that the man had clearly jumped in front of the train, GRP officials have reported the incident as accidental death. Nilesh, the brother of the deceased, said: “He had lost his job around five months ago and was staying with us ever since. There was no fight or altercation of any kind. We have no clue what made him take such an extreme step.”

*The Badlapur incident*
The other incident took place an hour later at around 9.43 am at Badlapur platform while the Karjat-CST UP train was entering the platform. Sagar Patil (22) an eyewitness said: “She saw the train coming and jumped onto the tracks. The train was relatively slow as some work on tracks is going on. But the impact was still dangerous. For a moment I even contemplated jumping on the tracks and pushing her away but it was too late and the train ran over her,” said Patil.

The motorman this time was quick to apply the brakes. People were surprised to see the girl get away from the impact with minimum injuries. According to the stationmaster PK Lal, passengers present on the platform dragged the woman from under the compartment and rushed her to the nearby Rathod Hospital from where she was later shifted to Dhanwantari Hospital by her family.

*Great escape*
Doctors who attended to Tawde said that she has sustained minor cuts on her head, displaced her jaw and has sprained her back as well as her leg. Tawde’s mother Smita said: “We had a minor tiff in the morning and later I came to know about the incident. She is the head girl of Fatima High School and a bright student. I don’t know what went wrong and why she took such a drastic step.” Reported by Mid-Day 2 days ago.
