Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy President Roy Castelino has said that the Academy is ready to introduce Konkani in Pre-University Colleges and the proposal is before the government. He was speaking at Konkani teachers' convention, jointly organised by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and Lions Club, at Lions Seva Mandir here on Tuesday.

At present, Konkani is being taught as third language at 60 primary schools, 27 high schools and four degree colleges. The government has forwarded a copy of syllabus prepared for Pre-University students to the Goa University for approval. If the Academy gets permission from the government, Konkani will be introduced as third language even in pre-university colleges from next academic year, he said.

*Language of all
*
"There are around 50 lakh people belonging to three religions from five states who speak Konkani.

The language is written in five different scripts. Though there are small differences in the usage, the language should be brought under one roof and Konkani should be language of all. The role of teachers and parents is great in this process. They should motivate children to speak Konkani. Forums like Konkani club, cultural activities may help in this regard," he said.

*Respect languages
*
Former Lions district governor K C Prabhu stressed that one should respect others' language. "One should not hesitate to speak a language and live like a frog in well. To communicate, we just need to know how to read the language and understand it. There is nothing to do with the script. Teachers, who know how to communicate, are better persons to teach the language," he said.

District Institute for Education of Teachers (DIET) Principal Cyprian Montero released 'Konkani Sampada,' a handbook on methodology of teaching Konkani for teachers. Cyprian Montero said that though Konkani has been introduced as third language till 10th Standard, the number of students preferring it is very less. An action plan is needed on increasing the number of students. The handbook will help teachers to learn and teach Konkani to primary and high school students, he said. Monteiro was felicitated on the occasion.

Mangalore University Kannada Department Head Prof Shivaram Shetty, Mangalore Lions Club President C P Dinesh, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Registrar Dr Devdas Pai were present among others. Reported by Deccan Herald 16 hours ago.
