*The tribal students who were awaiting the nod from the Education department to continue their schooling in the same school at Mangala, have been left in a lurch. *

The department has not given the necessary permission to extend the school to high school, leaving 31 students facing a bleak future. These students have not been attending regular school for over a month now.

The students, living in the fringes of the forests, can study up to 8th standard at the government school at Mangala, which comes under the Bandipur National Park limits.

As many as 31 students who had completed eighth standard and awaiting admissions for 9th standard are now troubled about their future.

It can be recalled that the students on completion of 7th standard, had sought the help of the Child Protection Committee to introduce high school in the same premises.

The Block Education Officer had assured that 9th standard classes would begin in the same school and there was no need to obtain transfer certificates.

Mangala gram panchayat had also donated two acres of land for the extension of the school, and for the construction of a classroom. But this again has not served the purpose.

Now, with the government backing off, the students and parents rue that it has been difficult to get admission in other schools now. Even if pressure is exerted to admit students in other schools, only 10 to 12 students are willing to venture out. The others would become dropouts.

Currently, the tribal students are being ferried to school by a van donated by Good Neighbour India organisation, from the fringes of the forests.

For HighSchool, they will have to travel to Hangala, which is about eight kilometers from Mangala. Since there is no transport facility, the parents fear for the lives of their wards, as they have to travel through forest patches, which leaves them vulnerable to attacks from wild animals.

Out of 33 students, two girl students have obtained TCs. The BEO has allegedly sent the TCs of all the remaining 31 students to a High School in Hangala, but the parents are not interested in sending their wards there.

As a temporary measure, the voluntary organisations have joined hands and have appointed guest teachers, and have begun classes. But there is no Hindi teacher.

The Headmistress Anthonyammal has sought additional ration to provide mid-day meals and also textbooks.

The government should immediately act and give an approval for the High school, keeping in mind the future of the students, opine the parents. Reported by Deccan Herald 12 hours ago.
