Hundreds of children fell sick on Wednesday after consuming deworming tablets across two districts of West Bengal— East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas.
The West Bengal government carried out the deworming process at schools across several districts. Of them, students of three schools at Pashkura, four at Moyna and one at Kolaghat in East Midnapore district, fell sick after consuming the deworming tablets. All these children have been admitted to the Tamluk hospital and are undergoing treatment.
“There are reports of children complaining of discomfort after consuming those tablets. But, it is not very serious, they are being attended to and undergoing treatment,” said Alok Rajoria, Superintendent of Police, East Midnapore district, West Bengal.
Students of one school in South 24 Parganas district, Basanti High School, also complained of sickness after consuming the same medicine. They have been admitted to the Basanti Block Hospital and are undergoing treatment.
Sources in the health department of the state reveal that the students were asked to consume the medicine on empty stomach hence complained of discomfort.
When *dna *tried to get in touch with the Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas, Sunil Choudhury, he asked us to speak to the District Magistrate, PB Salim, who refused to speak on the matter and asked this correspondent to speak to the SDPO.
