*Even though the Government Primary High School at Yellukunte in Mangammanapalya, off HSRLayout, has a playground, children are deprived of the facility, for a house has been constructed right in the middle of the play area.

If one were to visit this school, they would notice that the play area for the children is too small. It does not need a second look to notice a house that is located right in the middle of the school premises. A local resident, teachers say, has encroached upon the play area and built his house well within the school compound forcing children to stay indoors or utilise the remaining area to play.

Speaking to Deccan Herald on the conditions of anonymity, one of the senior teachers at the school said that the man, who claims to be the original inhabitant of the area, has been living there for many years now. "When a couple of teachers tried to approach him, he told us that he was the caretaker there and refused to vacate the place. As we do not have the power to act against him, we are helpless," he said.

The teachers at the school also said that he has the support of a local leader because of which not much has been done in this regard. "The issue has been brought to the notice of all the authorities as well," a teacher added.

The block education officer of the area, Munireddy, said the officials were aware of the issue and that it had been brought to the notice of their superiors. "Since verbal communication has not helped, we are contemplating pursuing the legal course," he added.

With just about four benches in each of the classrooms, children are forced to squat on the floors and study. On a bench that can seat about five, at least seven were seen with books on their laps. Besides, there are no basic facilities such as cupboards in the schools, teachers said. For a strength of over 500 children, they have just three toilets in the school. The backyard of this school also turns into a waste dumping yard for the locals. Reported by Deccan Herald 1 day ago.
