An increasing number of students from Mumbai scored 75% and above in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) state board examinations, as compared with last year's figures. The main reason for the increase is that many students scored heavily on their projects and oral exams (collectively known as internal marks), which were assessed by their own colleges.
Last year, 28,781 regular candidates from Mumbai region scored 75% and above. This year, the number of regular candidates scoring 75% and above is 34,426.
Bina Gole, principal of Vivekanand Education Society's High school and junior college in Chembur, said, "One of the main reasons behind the increase in the percentage is the internal marks that they get in projects and oral exams. One of the students from my college has scored 99 marks out of 100 in economics, which is very rare. A couple of students, for the first time, have scored 98 and 99 marks in accounts subjects, which also is surprising."
Echoing Gole's sentiments, Professor Anil Deshmukh, General secretary, the Maharashtra state federation of junior college teachers organisation, said, "Science students always score more because of their practical examinations. But since 2013, the Board has started having projects and oral examinations for the arts and commerce streams. The projects and oral exams are conducted by the respective colleges themselves. These might have helped many to score above 75% in their HSC board exams."
This year the HSC pass percentage of the Mumbai divisional board has also increased as compared with last year's figure.
But others strike a dissenting note. Another principal, Dr MZ Farooqui, of Bandra's Rizvi college, said, "I feel that the examination might have been easy and the paper pattern might have been predictable. That could have helped students to score well this year."
