*About one lakh students have failed in Hindi paper in the high school examination of the Uttar Pradesh Board, results of which were declared on Sunday.*

According to the Board sources, over 43.74 lakh students had appeared for the Hindi paper in the high school exam which were held in March. The results showed that a little over 1.03 lakh students had failed in Hindi.

According to the Board regulations, those who failed in Hindi, were not allowed to take admission in the next class.

"Those failing in Hindi will have to clear it before being declared pass," said a Board official here.

Educationists have expressed shock and dismay over such a large number of unsuccessful candidates in Hindi subject and called for remedial measures.
"It is very shocking. Hindi is mother tongue of a majority of candidates in UP," said Prof Dinesh Kumar, a former faculty at Lucknow University.

Prof Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, a faculty in the Hindi Department at Lucknow University, feels that the students of the present generation do not take much interest in Hindi as a subject.

"The students usually start studying Hindi a day or two before the paper thinking that they could easily pass it," Prof Tripathi told Deccan Herald here on Monday.

Prof Tripathi said it was a serious matter and needed urgent attention of the experts and educationists. Reported by Deccan Herald 7 hours ago.
