Suttur fair from January 17 to 22

*The annual Shivarathreeshwara Shivayogigala Jatra Mahotsav of Suttur Mutt will be held at Suttur Sri Kshetra, Nanjangud taluk in the district from January 17 to 22.*

Addressing the media at Suttur Sri Kshetra here recently, former MLA and president of Jatra Mahotsava Committee HGangadharan said that as part of the fair, various events like bhajan mela, cattle fair, free mass marriage ceremony, painting, rangoli and sobane singing competitions, boating, kite festival, krishi mela, desi games and wrestling tournaments have been organised.

The highlight of the fair, Rathotsava (Car festival) has been organised on January 19, while Theppotsava (coracle fest) will be held on January 21. Chief MinisterSiddaramaiah is expected to lay foundation stone for the museum building on January 22 at 10.30 am.

Gangadharan said that the response for mass marriage was good, with 225 couples irrespective of caste enrolling their names to enter into wedlock.

Exhibition
The exhibition will be organised in a grand manner with over 300 stalls, where the different aspects of agriculture will be recreated on one acre land, with an exhibition of different varieties of paddy and millets.

The cattle expo will comprise cows, buffalos, sheeps, goats among other livestock. Six breeds of goats from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab andGujarat will be the highlight.

To give impetus to different cultures, traditions and art forms, performances like Yakshagana, folk songs, light music, staging of bharathanatya, folk dance, doll show and day-long drama have also been organised.

According to the organisers, the fair this time is expected to witness participation of farmers in large numbers.Last year, the fair had been cancelled owing to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

To cater to the huge turnout, especially with sumptuous food, as many as 5,000 cooks along with 500 assistants have been roped in to prepare the food. The menu includes five lakh each of 'Mysore Pak' and 'Badusha' sweetmeats, 10 lakh 'laddoos' and 150 quintals of sweet 'boondhi'.

Rice
As many as 1,600 quintals of rice from Gangavathi, 200 quintals of tur gram, 80,000 tender coconuts and 2,600 tins of edible oil from Gulbarga, 25 quintals of pickles and 15 lakh plates from Vatal village have been collected.

As many as 30 huge vessels have been brought from Haryana for the purpose.
According to KSRTCAssistant TrafficController Dinesh, 20 additional buses will be plied from city bus stand to Suttur and also from Nanjangud, during the period.

Painting competition
A State-level drawing and painting competition for children, under four categories, on January 17 at Suttur, in Nanjangud taluk, as part of the annual fair.

A press note from G R Nidavani, convenor of the competition, students of first and second standard are free to choose their subject.

The subject for third and fourth standard students is Dasara; for fifth, sixth and seventh standard students Vanamahothsava; and Clean India Campaign for high school children. The participants will be provided only drawing sheets. Call: 94802 81097 or 94489 57905.
