*The temple town woke up on Sunday for the brisk sounds of the footsteps coupled with rhythmic wisp of air, when thousands of athletes put their best to prove, in the 9th Syndicate bank half marathon-2014 here during the wee hours.*
The 21-kilometers run kicked off at around 6.30 am following the green signal shown by actor Prakash Raj, who also accompanied the runners for few miles of run. The 21 kilometers of run covered whole of Manipal and partly Udupi.
The runners irrespective of age took part in the marathon with zeal and determination to win the challenge. The run was organized in various categories.
The main event of 21 kilometers of run was open to all and was held separately for male and females. Under the category for men, Sadhashiva B from SDM Sports Club, Ujire, bagged the first prize by reaching the target in one hour 13 minutes and 27 seconds. While the first runner up Sharath from Alva's College, Mudbidri, covered the distance in one hour, 17 minutes and 55 seconds.
The second runner up Siddarayyappa from Alva's College, Mudbidri covered the distance in one hour 20 minutes and 55 seconds. Jyothi Shetty from Udupi bagged the first prize under women's category, while Nandini Bhat and Arunkala S Rao won the second and third prize respectively. In this category, the first prize carries Rs 25,000 as the cash amount, while Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 for the second and third place respectively.
A separate seven kilometers run was conducted for the males and females in the district aged under 21. Chidananda H V from Nitte, Kalander Zaheed from Government PU College, Palimaru and Sachin from Nitte won the first, second and third places respectively.
Among women, Bindu from Nitte, Jyothi from Nitte and Manjula V H from Nitte won the first, second and third places respectively. The half marathon was conducted separately for under 14 for three-kilometers run. The winners are Shreesha Shetty from Nitte, Sandeep Naik from Sharada High School, Cherkadi and Tarun from Nitte. Among girls, the winners are Vaishali from Government High School, Perdur, Adeeksha from Sharada High school, Cherakdi and Pooja Shetty from Udupi. The winner received Rs 3,000 amount, while the first runner up received Rs 2,000 and the second runner up received Rs 1,000 respectively.
Under five kilometers run for under 17, the winners were Dinesh from Nitte, Rohit from Sharada High School and Pervin Rodrigues from Milagres High school, Kalyanpura. Among girls, Suma from Nitte, Saritha from Government High School, Perdur and Bhoomika from Sanjay Gandhi High School, Amparu won frist, scond nad third places respectively. The first prize winner received Rs 5,000 and the first and second runner-ups received Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. Anil Kumar from Kota and Prasanni from Aruru won the first place for men and women under celebrity category.
The athletes from the district who completed the run were felicitated with consolation prizes. The total amount of prizes given away during the event is Rs 2.75 lakh.
International athlete Suresh Prabhu said that there needs sportive atmosphere and high spirit for the exposure of the talent. Youths should take part in large number in the sports activities.
